About Raster to Vector Conversion

Raster to vector conversion has become a very important part of graphic design. Most designers know that raster images cannot be directly converted into vectors, but they don’t really know why. In this article, I’ll explain the basics of raster to vector conversion and show you some examples of how it can be useful. Raster graphics are images created using pixels (picture elements). They are pixelated and two-dimensional. On the other hand, vector graphics are mathematical shapes that can be scaled without affecting their size or shape. Converting raster images into vectors is a two-step process. First, you’ll need to open the file in Photoshop or another photo editing program. Then, select the type of conversion you’d like to perform. The options include raster to vector, vector to raster, and the bitmap to vector.

The advantage of vector graphics over raster images is that they can be easily edited, resized, rotated, etc. Vector graphics are often used in web design because they are scalable and editable. When converting from raster to vector, you should choose the type of output file carefully. There are three types of files: EPS, SVG, and AI. Each of them has its advantages and disadvantages.

Raster to Vector Conversion

A raster image is a bitmap file format that stores information about images using a grid-like system of dots. These dots represent individual pixels (picture elements) of the image. A vector image is any graphics file format that uses geometric shapes instead of dots to store information about the image. In simple terms, a raster image is a picture with pixels while a vector image is a picture without pixels.

Raster files have been around since the early days of computers. However, they were not widely used until the 1990s when digital cameras became popular. Today, rasters are still used for many things including printing newspapers, magazines, books, maps, and even web pages. There are two types of rasters: True Color and Indexed Color.

True color rasters use 24 bits per pixel (bpp), 8 bits each for red, green, blue, and alpha (transparency). Indexed color rasters use 16 bpp, 4 bits each for red, blue, green, and alpha. Both true color and indexed color rasters are often referred to simply as “rasters”.

Vector images are much easier to work with than rasters. They require less storage space and are generally faster to render. Because of these advantages, vector images are commonly used for logos, illustrations, and computer-generated graphics.

The first step in converting a raster image to a vector image is called rasterizing. Rasterization means taking a raster image and turning it into a vector image. There are several ways to do this, but the most common method is to use a software program called a raster to vector converter.

There are three basic steps

1. Resampling

Resampling refers to changing the resolution of the raster image. Changing the resolution changes how small or big the pixels are. Increasing the resolution makes the pixels smaller and vice versa.

2. Cropping

Cropping refers to removing parts of the raster image that you don’t want. Cropping removes unwanted parts of the image.

3. Scaling

Scaling refers to increasing or decreasing the size of the raster image’s pixels. Increasing the size increases the number of pixels in the image. Decreasing the size decreases the number of pixels in an image.

After you’ve resampled, cropped, and scaled the raster image, you’re ready to convert it to a vector image. There is no single way to convert a raster image to a vector; however, there are some general guidelines that should help you decide what type of conversion would be best for your project. If the goal is to create a logo, illustration, or similar design, then a high-quality vector image is probably the best choice. If the goal is to print a newspaper article or magazine page, then a lower-quality vector image might be better.

Converting from raster to vector requires special software.  In fact, editing raster images requires time-consuming tasks such as cropping, recoloring, and reordering.
